Our first dexters came to the farm in April 2011. We’re in WNY (between Jamestown and Fredonia). We only have a small herd, and we’re just getting started ourselves, but we’re happy to share what we know and resources. We also will have animals for sale occasionally as we don’t have space to keep more than a small herd ourselves.
Current animals we are willing to sell (more information on each available in their descriptions further down):
Bietschehof Cranberry– calved in September 2015. Legacy and ADCA registered, genotyped, chondro free, DOES carry PHA. Black, partially dehorned. Not exposed to bull or re-bred yet. Her bull calf (Simple Logan Berry) is also available- black, dehorned, obligate chondro free, register-able, untested for PHA at this time.
Simple Frankenberry “Frankie”– born spring 2015 out of Chautauqua Phelan and Simple Holly Berry. Black, dehorned, obligate chondro free. May carry PHA, untested at this time.
We’re working to get our registered animals in both ADCA and Legacy. There’s still some details to iron out, but all info is included in each animal’s info below. I’ll try to make sure I update as things change.
All of our animals are haltered. All are in electric fencing and respect this. All have at least some experience being tethered.
The ladies:
Bietschehof Cranberry DOB: 11/25/10 (Pictured as a calf, a 2 year old, a 3 year old, and a 4 year old, last picture includes Junie B.)
Legacy reg. No. L00880MH-10HH
Sire: Hollofield Ian ADCA reg. No. 14462, Legacy Dexter Cattle Registry # L00419MH-03HH
Dam: Bietschehof Ellie Mae ADCA reg. No. 019746, Legacy Dexter Cattle Registry # L00879TH-99HH
Breeder: William Durst (#420) Bietschehof Farm, Maryland
Genotyped at UC Davis, Legacy Dexter Cattle Registry # L00880MH-10HH
ADCA reg. No. 036036
Black, Horned (partially dehorned)
Tested PHA carrier (Hollofield Ian is a tested carrier), tested Chondro NON-carrier
Cranberry was born in the time (approximately a year) between Durst’s farm and mine.
She produced a June 2013 heifer calf (Simple Holly Berry) that I am retaining for my herd.
She produced a June 2014 heifer calf (Simple Juniper Berry) that is available.
Bietschehof Norma DOB: 6/26/08 There are some questions still being sorted regarding Norma’s sire, although it is quite certain she is purebred (only dexters on the farm where she was raised, and no other bulls anywhere nearby). We believe she is out of Maxmilion of Old Orchard. I’m trying to verify Max’s deceased date to verify if he could have been her sire. Her genotype indicates she could NOT be out of Hollofield Ian as was originally relayed to me. Until I can verify information about Max, she and her offspring cannot be registered (and maybe never registerable).
Pictured as a 3 year old, 4 year old, 6 year old, and udder at 2nd lactation. Also pictured with Ivy.
Sire: may be Maxmilion of Old Orchard, still working on some details to determine.
Dam: Bietschehof Felicity ADCA reg. No. 030907 (full sister to Ellie Mae, more info on her lower on this page)
Breeder: William Durst (#420) Bietschehof Farm, Maryland
Black, Horned (now de-horned)
Tested Non carrier for both PHA and Chondro.
Hand milked from April 2012 to November 2012. Not interested in the milking machine. Sharemilking 1x/ day I would get between 2qts and 1 gallon, 1 qt. depending on let down, time separated from calf, and how well my wrists felt that day. May 2013 heifer calf (Ivy) out of Chautauqua Phelan. Currently (May) giving 3/4-1 gallon per milking, calf always on.
Handmilked again in May 2014 through the fall sharemilking with heifer calf (Zelda). Similar milking yields.
Was handmilked by the previous owner, she got 1/2 a gallon a day 1x/ a day, I believe, for her first lactation.
Simple Ramona: born 2015 out of Bietschehof Norma and Chautauqua Phelan. Black, dehorned. Obligate condro and PHA free. Her dam is my milk cow.
Simple Holly Berry out of Cranberry and Phelan, black, (de)horned, a super sweet little girl. I’m retaining her for my herd. Legacy and ADCA registered. Obligate free of Chondro. DOES carry PHA (sniffle, sniffle). I’ve worked with her minimally on milking- she’s good natured with no inclination to kick, but doesn’t understand to hold still for me and limited production in this first lactation.
Gave me a bull calf in spring of 2015- Simple Frankenberry (available).
Animals listed below are no longer here, but information is still posted here for reference.
Bietschehof Ellie Mae DOB 2/22/99 (our oldest lady now deceased)
ADCA reg. No. 019746, Legacy registered L00879TH-99HH
Sire: Maxmilion of Old Orchard ADCA reg. No. 6615
Dam: Tranquil of Old Orchard ADCA reg. No. 10851
Breeder: William Durst (#420) Bietschehof Farm, Maryland
Genotyped at UC Davis, Legacy Dexter Cattle Registry # L00879TH-99HH
Black, Horned
Tested carrier of Chondro, non-carrier of PHA.
Handmilked by me from the time I purchased her in April 2011 (with a 5 month old calf) to October (?) 2011. Sharemilked 1x/day. Poor letdown for me- I usually got 1-2 quarts, max of 3. I tried to wean the calf in August, but she started to dry up, so I put the calf back on after 2 weeks. The “calf” nursed until Late summer/fall 2012. I milked a few days in summer 2012, but didn’t continue because of poor letdown and another cow being milked. Will be milking her now that she has calved again, at least until Norma calves in end of April 2013 (I believe).
April 2013 bull calf (Cornelius) out of Chautauqua Phelan. Milking has varied from 1/2 gallon to over 1 gallon per milking. Currently 1 gallon, milking 1x/day with calf separated overnight, leaving 1 back quarter untouched for the calf.
Chautauqua Phelan DOB: 5/30/11 Our herd bull (went to freezer camp 1/17/15)
ADCA reg. No. 028518, Legacy Dexter Cattle Registry # LF00079TH-11
Sire: Ace of Clove Brook ADCA reg. # 14152, Legacy Dexter Cattle Registry # L00280TH-03HH
Dam: Chautauqua Poppy ADCA reg. # 10670, Legacy Dexter Cattle Registry # L00548TH-00HH
Breeder: Shaun Ann Lord (#938) Someday Maybe Farms, Forestville, NY
Black, Horned
from PHA and Chondro free herd, tested non-carrier of both.
Simple Ivy DOB 5/2/13 (not registered, may not be able to). (Sold spring 2015, had a black bull calf a couple of weeks later) Pictured as a calf with Norma, as a yearling, and as a coming 2 year old.
Sire: Chautauqua Phelan ADCA reg. No. 028518, Legacy Dexter Cattle Registry # LF00079TH-11
Dam: Bietschehof Norma- register-ability currently being explored.
Black, horned heifer
from PHA and chondro free parents.
Ivy is exposed to Phelan and I expect a March 2015 calf from her.
Nightingale DOB 3/30/12 (not registered-sold summer 2013 with her calf Breeze born at the beginning of July 2013- Note this means she was bred at only about 6 months old despite my attempts to keep her separated- I was too late. Dexters can breed very young!) pictures as a little calf, several months old, and 1 1/2 year old mama with her calf, and a closer view of her calf.
Sire: J&K Gideon (Lowline Angus, 75% LO, 25%TA, black, polled, 112X(XM12226) in American Lowline Registry, DOB 2/23/10)
Dam: Bietschehof Norma (purebred dexter- currently unregistered- see above)
Black, Horned female
Untested for PHA and Chondro
(Not register-able as a dexter; cannot be “graded up”. Could be registered as % lowline, I believe)
This is the first calf born on our homestead. She’s destined to fill the freezer, unless someone is interested in purchasing her 😉
DOB 3/19/13
(Pure & Simple Cornelius) DOB 3/19/13 (went to our freezer and he’s been tasty! Information kept here for reference). Traditional, Horned lines (no Modern lineage).
Sire: Chautauqua Phelan ADCA reg. No. 028518, Legacy Dexter Cattle Registry # LF00079TH-11
Dam: Bietschehof Ellie Mae ADCA reg. No. 019746, Legacy Dexter Cattle Registry # L00879TH-99HH
Black, horned bull calf
no testing yet completed (tail hairs retained for information if it’s ever needed)
Simple Juniper Berry (Junie B) (sold spring 2015) Out of Cranberry and Phelan, black, (de)horned heifer. Full sister to Holly. Genotyped, Legacy and ADCA registered. Tests free of PHA, obligate free of Chondro. Pictured as a coming yearling, also in picture with her dam (Cranberry).
Simple Zelda (sold spring 2015) out of Norma and Phelan, black, (de)horned heifer. Full sister to Ivy. Obligate free of PHA and Chondro, purebred, but may not be register-able. Pictured as a coming yearling.
Do you have any dexters for sale?
